<span class="paragraphSection">Evolution of tissue oxygenation monitoring by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is one of the most interesting recent developments in clinical monitoring.<a href="#aex032-B1" class="reflinks">¹</a> Given the importance of organ tissue perfusion for outcomes from surgery and critical illness, the fact that this technology can be used to interrogate almost any body region of interest (that can be placed within the device's photon beam) has stimulated a tremendous amount of scientific work on the potential diagnostic utility of NIRS.</span>
