Event-related brain potentials elicited by high-speed cooling of the skin: a robust and non-painful method to assess the spinothalamic system in humans

Neuropathic pain is defined by the International Association for the Study of Pain as "pain arising as a direct consequence of a lesion or disease of the somatosensory system" (Loeser and Treede, 2008). This implies that the diagnostic work-up of neuropathic pain requires clinical tools to assess the function of the somatosensory system, including the function of the spinothalamic system.
