Salivary Cortisol: Is it Still the Canary in the Coal Mine?

Researchers have long been interested in understanding the biological mechanisms by which stress "gets under the skin" to affect health. One potential mechanism that has received widespread and persistent attention is the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, a hormonal response system, which can be activated by a broad range of mental and physical stressors. Of all the hormones released by the activation of the HPA axis, cortisol has received the most attention, primarily because of its widespread regulatory influences and the relative ease of measuring it noninvasively in saliva.
