Minimally invasive TLIF leads to increased muscle sparing of the multifidus muscle but not the longissimus muscle compared with conventional PLIF- a prospective randomized clinical trial

The authors have prospectively compared two groups of patients following posterior/transforaminal interbody fusion through either a midline (traditional) approach or a Wiltse incision (MIS approach). They studied the changes in the paraspinal musculature using a CT-based technique to evaluate volume atrophy and fatty degeneration following surgery at the index and adjacent levels. Radiographic changes were studied at the 1-week and 12-month time points and clinical parameters were compared at the preoperative, 1-week and 12-month time points.
