We read with great interest the landmark article by Gaul1 in which 16 individuals with positive patch test results to nickel received additional patch testing to inorganic and organic substances and more than half developed multiple sensitivities after the primary nickel sensitization. Notably, the patients with multiple sensitivities had developed more extensive dermatoses, had higher recurrence rates (characterized by decreased pain sensation, uncontrollable pruritus, and chronic eczema), and required multiple hospitalizations.
