Ionic liquids are a type of low melting salts, which are generally non-volatile with low vapour pressure, very high boiling points and excellent thermal stability. In addition, they have unique physical and chemical properties including high variable viscosity in comparison with common inorganic salts and organic liquids. Consequently, they have found potential applications in a broad area of green chemistry and as electrolytes. Recently, advanced development of ionic liquid has been made in boron chemistry and as such various boron containing ionic liquids have been reported and their applications in classic organic synthesis have been explored. Interestingly, many boron related reactions, such as hydroboration, were explored in ionic liquid media. This mini review mainly focuses the progress of boron-containing ionic liquids and the reactions involving boron compounds in ionic liquids.
